FUNCTION OF GOD’S LAW

The essence of God’s Law is to love Him with all your heart and soul. However, there is a big problem - not with the Law, but with us. We cannot walk in His ways, keep His commandments, hold fast to Him, and serve Him with all our heart and soul because there is another law at work in our body: the law of SIN ( see Romans 7:5).

Truth is, we love to sin, hold fast to it, and serve it with our heart and soul. For the things of God are foolishness to those who are perishing in their sins, (see 1 Corinthians 2:14-18). As Paul found in his own experience ( Romans 7). The function of the Law is to bring the knowledge that we fall short of its perfect demands, and therefore desperately need a Savior. You see, when Adam sinned he lost God’s Spirit that was within him due to his willful rebellion; he became disobedient to the God who gave him life. That separation made a huge difference in Adam, and his world changed as did his relationship with God. From that point on everyone born into the world from Adam became sons and daughters of Adam. Why? Because we all are born with Adam’s sin nature and God gave His Laws so that we can see our “sin nature” therefore, our need for a Savior who is Jesus. (John 3:16)

Only Jesus can break off that sin nature, and we are given God’s Holy Spirit again, which is what it means to be “born again”Not by flesh, but SPIRIT. Until this happens we are in the wrath of God which His Laws reveal to us. Those in rebellion cannot follow the Law and soon parish. So it is in the physical, and Spiritual.

The Heidelberg Disputation, (1518) said, “The Law brings the wrath of God, kills, reviles, accuses, judges, and condemns everything that is not in Christ.”
